When It Genuinely Helps
After Renovations
Drywall dust travels everywhere and settles in the ductwork. This is the single most worthwhile reason to have ducts cleaned.
After Moving In
You have no idea what the previous household put through that system. A clean start is reasonable, especially with pets or allergies in the picture.
Visible Debris
If you can see dust and lint building up at the registers, the system is circulating it. That is a clear case rather than a maybe.
After Pest Activity
Rodents or insects in the ductwork leave more than mess behind. Cleaning is the right response, along with sealing the entry point.
Newly Built Homes
Construction debris in the ducts is extremely common and almost never dealt with before handover.
Persistent Dust
If dusting never seems to help, the ductwork is a reasonable suspect — though the filter and the blower are worth checking first.
When It Will Not Help
Duct cleaning is often sold as a cure for problems it does not solve. If rooms heat unevenly, that is usually a balancing or sizing issue, not dirt. If the system is short-cycling, that is a control or capacity problem. If your bills are high, the filter, the charge and the insulation matter far more.
We would rather diagnose the actual cause than take money for a service that leaves you with the same complaint. If duct cleaning is not the answer, we will say so and tell you what is.
How Often?
For a typical Ottawa home with no renovations and no pets, every five to seven years is plenty. More often than that is rarely justified.
Changing the filter on schedule does more for your air and your equipment than frequent duct cleaning ever will, and it costs a fraction as much.
Common Questions
How long does it take?
Most homes take two to four hours depending on the size of the system and the number of registers.
Is it messy?
It should not be. Equipment is sealed to the ductwork and registers are covered. Any technician who leaves dust in your rooms has done it wrong.
Should I do it every year?
No. For most homes every five to seven years is enough unless there has been renovation, pest activity or a move.
Will it fix uneven heating?
Usually not. That is normally a balancing or sizing problem — we can look at that instead, and it is often the cheaper fix.
