Does a Smart Thermostat Actually Save Money?
It can, but not by magic. The saving comes from the system running less when nobody benefits from it — and a basic programmable thermostat achieves most of that if you set it and leave it alone.
Where a smart thermostat earns its price is in households where the schedule is unpredictable, or where nobody was ever going to program the old one. The honest version is that the biggest saving comes from any thermostat being used properly rather than from the badge on the front.
A Word on Setback
Turning the heat well down while you are out saves money on a furnace. On a heat pump it can cost you, because recovering the temperature pulls in expensive auxiliary heat.
If you have a heat pump, a smaller setback usually works out cheaper than a large one. Ask us and we will set it up for the system you actually have.
Common Questions
Can I install one myself?
Many are designed for it. The two things that catch people out are the common wire and heat pump changeover wiring — if either applies, it is worth having it done.
Will it work with my furnace?
Almost certainly, but heat pumps and multi-stage systems need a compatible model. We check before recommending.
Do you install customer-supplied thermostats?
Yes. Tell us the model when you book so we can confirm compatibility first.
Are there rebates?
Some models qualify. We check eligibility and file the paperwork as part of the installation.
