What We Check
Airflow and Balance
A ventilator that is out of balance either over-pressurises the house or pulls in too much cold air. We measure the airflow rather than guess at it.
Core and Filters
A blocked core or a filter no one has changed in years is the most common reason an HRV stops ventilating. Both are inspected and assessed.
Fan and Motor
Humming, rattling or a unit that will not start usually points at the fan or motor. We test both under real operating conditions.
Controls and Wall Switch
Many HRVs are quietly doing nothing because the control never calls for ventilation. We test the control, the wiring and the interlock with the furnace.
Drainage
HRVs produce condensate in winter. A blocked drain or dry trap causes water where it should not be, and can shut the unit down.
Duct Connections
Disconnected or crushed flexible duct behind the unit is common in Ottawa basements and quietly cancels out the whole system.

Why Ventilation Matters in a Sealed House
Modern Ottawa homes are built tight to keep heat in, which also keeps moisture and stale air in. An HRV or ERV is what replaces that air without throwing away the heat. When it stops working, condensation, odours and stuffiness follow within weeks.
The Unit That Was Switched Off
A great many HRVs in Ottawa were turned off years ago because they were noisy or drafty. That is almost always a fault or a balance problem, not a reason to leave the system idle. In most cases it can be put right in a single visit.
Common Questions
Do you repair both HRV and ERV systems?
Yes. We diagnose and repair residential HRV and ERV ventilation systems.
What brands do you service?
We service most major HRV and ERV brands, including Fantech, Lifebreath, Panasonic, and others.
Why is my HRV or ERV not moving enough air?
Common causes include dirty filters or cores, airflow restrictions, fan or motor problems, control issues, or improper system balancing.
Why is my HRV making unusual noises?
Fan or motor problems, debris, loose components, or airflow restrictions can cause unusual noises.
Does an HRV or ERV need regular maintenance?
Yes. Filters, cores, drains, and ventilation components should be inspected and cleaned regularly to maintain proper performance.
Can you check if my HRV or ERV is properly balanced?
Yes. Airflow and system balance can be assessed as part of the service when required.
Will I receive a repair quote before work begins?
Yes. We provide repair recommendations and upfront pricing before proceeding with the repair.
My HRV has been switched off for years. Can it be revived?
Usually, yes. We assess the condition of the core, motor and ducting and tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes better sense.
