Why Ottawa Homes Test
Radon levels depend on the ground under the house and how tightly the house is sealed, not on the age or price of the building. Two identical homes on the same street can read very differently. Winter is the honest time to measure, because the house is closed up and the readings reflect the worst case rather than the best.
What a Mitigation System Is
A fan draws air from beneath the concrete slab and vents it above the roofline, so the gas never enters the living space. The pipe runs where it can be hidden. A monitor on the pipe shows at a glance that the fan is still pulling. Most installations are a single day.
Common Questions
How long does a radon test take?
A long-term test runs at least three months, and that is the measurement Health Canada asks for. A short-term test gives you an early indication in a few days, but it is a screen, not a verdict.
What reading means I need a system?
Health Canada’s guideline is 200 Bq/m³. Above that, remediation is recommended. Between 100 and 200 it is a judgement call and worth discussing.
Will the fan be noisy?
It runs continuously but it is a small, low-wattage fan, usually mounted outside or in an attic. Inside the house you are unlikely to notice it.
Do you retest after installing?
Yes. A system that has not been verified is only a guess. We measure again once it has been running so you have a before and after.
